While speaking about the subject of space exploration, he explained why he is investing so much time and money on his space transport company, SpaceX, despite many viewing it as a distraction from his other ventures.

During the conference, he talked about how the U.S space programme is heading in the wrong direction. He said this:

“People are mistaken when they think that technology just automatically improves. It does not automatically improve. It only improves if a lot of people work very hard to make it better, and actually it will, I think, by itself degrade, actually.

You look at great civilizations like Ancient Egypt, and they were able to make the pyramids, and they forgot how to do that. And then the Romans, they built these incredible aqueducts. They forgot how to do it.”

Inc. has summed up his point to a single piece of career advice that all of us need to hear:

“If you’re not progressing, you’re regressing; so, keep moving forward. No matter your goals, the key to success is to keep pushing forward.”

This does not mean you will not meet with any setbacks and failures – Musk himself has failed many times before achieving his current state of success. In fact, failures offer valuable lessons and experiences which will help pave the way to your end goals.

To maintain a progressive mind-set, one must learn from past mistakes and not dwell on them and continue to set even more challenging goals, even after reaching your first goal.

Ultimately, not giving up even when the times are tough is the best way to go.

“Because if you’re not moving forward, you’re headed in the wrong direction”

Even if you don’t see eye to eye with him on his advice, we can still learn a thing or two about his way of thinking and his capacity to dream big and inspire many.
