In a surprising twist of events, an unexpected candidate has put in his name for this year’s presidential election.

Uber driver Shirwin Eu – who previously attempted to run in the 2015 General Elections and the Bukit Batok By-Election last year – turned up at the Elections Department Office this morning to collect his application papers.

The application period for the election began this morning (1 June).

That said, the success of Shirwin’s application is very slim due to this year’s constitutional changes which reserves the election for Malay candidates.

To explain his decision, Shirwin stated in an video interview with the Straits Times that he was banking on Tan Cheng Bock and M Ravi’s legal challenges to the constitutional changes.

“I understand that this a reserved elections for minorities, but the verdict is not out yet. I think there is a chance that the government will reveal their intentions.

Of course, we know that there are still persons (sic) who are appealing, so it will depend on the final court of appeal and the panel of judges’ conclusion on whether this election should be held openly and freely.”

Reserved For Malays:

The elections, which will happen later this year in September, has caused controversy for being reserved specifically for Malays.

As such, applicants will need a Malay Community Certificate, which will be approved by a sub-committee.

This sub-committee is made up of prominent local members of the community like the president of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore Mr Mohammad Alami Musa and is headed by former nominated member of parliament Imram Mohamed.

Are You Sure, Shirwin?

Singaporeans are no stranger to Shirwin’s political antics, and they expressed their confusion on Facebook almost immediately.

Some defended his actions, and argued that he was just chasing his dreams.

Others likened it to last year’s controversial American presidential election.

One netizen suggested that the solution was all in his name.
