Tucked in a corner of SCAPE is Chimney – specialising in Kürtőskalács, a traditional Hungarian pastry. Imagine freshly baked upright cylindrical rolls of sweet dough covered in the classic cinnamon sugar or other unique yet equally mouthwatering toppings.

The fun part about these Kürtőskalács, or Chimney Cakes, as we call it, is when you unravel its endless layers as the fragrance of sweet dough awake your senses. While Chimney offers fun toppings like turkey bacon, nutella cinnamon or even salted egg, we recommend heading straight for their Chimney Cake with Soft Serve ($4.50).

Don’t let the 10-minute waiting time deter you, because the temperature contrast between the warm chimney cake and cold soft serve is a delightful and perfect combination – especially in our hot, humid weather.

Choose between the chocolate soft serve, vanilla or a mix to complement your chimney cake. It can get pretty messy towards the end but we reckon it’s totally worth it. For those who want an extra burst of flavor, don’t forget to add Nutella or peanut butter for just an additional dollar.
 

Hokkaido Ice Cream Puff

Not to be confused with its cream puff counterpart, this new kid in the block is actually a franchise chain that originated from Malaysia, not Hokkaido. Singaporeans are known to be drawn to anything Hokkaido-related, and its name can be a tad misleading.

It’s essentially a choux pastry stuffed with generous scoops of ice cream. Choose from Durian, Coffee, Taro or Cookies and Cream. Our only gripe is their lack of interesting ice cream flavours such as pistachio or thai milk tea – our local ice cream shops for sure has a wider variety.

Definitely an instagram-worthy dessert and we’re glad to say it certainly does not disappoint in the taste department. The airy and buttery pastry complements the creaminess of the ice cream – reminding us slightly of a cookie ice cream sandwich. The choux pastry is rather decent and it can be described as a crossover of the crusty puff from Beard Papa and a chewy, sugary pastry.
 

Hvala Waffle Soft Serve

A modern take on the Hong Kong-style egg waffles, Hvala Waffle Bar offers a dessert parfait of sorts that is photogenic in all angles. The egg waffle, or puffle, as they call it, is added to a cup of soft serve. As if it isn’t enough, the dessert is then topped with two toppings of your choice – koko crunch, muesli, fruity pebbles or speculoos spread.

For $6.90, it makes for a decent and satisfying dessert for that after dinner sweet craving. Go for their Tsuba ($7.80), which is a cup of matcha soft serve topped with torched dango balls, seaweed senbei and gula melaka. It sounds slightly dodgy, but hey, don’t judge an ice cream by its toppings.
 

Kooks Creamery Lava Molten Cookie

You have seen molten lava cakes and molten cheese tarts, but have you tried Kooks Creamery’s exploding molten lava cookies?

This quaint dessert shop nestled under a HDB block along Serangoon Avenue 4 proves to be a cafe you’ll bring your friends to on a dessert date after school. Specialising in a wide array of milky ice-cream flavours, from earl grey, ovaltine to thai milk tea, their Lava Cookie Sets brings a refreshing twist to conventional ice-cream on waffles by swapping the latter out for molten lava cookies.

Buttery, crumbly cookies – the whole dessert is perfection on a plate.

There are two lava cookies to choose from: matcha and chocolate. Lava Cookie Sets are available at $8.50 with a scoop of ice cream.

Each cookie is freshly baked upon ordering so expect to wait. It will be ready to ooze out when you plop a giant scoop of your ice cream on it. Very satisfying and instagram-worthy indeed.  
 

Atlas Butterscotch Banana Pancake

This one from ATLAS is already Insta-famous judging by the amount of pictures flooding social media. Crispy on the outside and soft, fluffy and moist on the inside – it’s the perfect pancake topped with honeycomb ice cream, bananas and caramelized cornflakes.

Atlas Coffeehouse is helmed by the team behind Assembly Coffee, known for their Shibuya toasts, waffles and coffee which appeal to university undergraduates. This is conveniently located at Duke’s Road is only a 5-minute walk from Botanic Gardens MRT.

Savour the Butterscotch Banana Pancake ($18) with a Flat White ($5), we promise you’ll go to dessert heaven. The pancake is not your usual thin, fluffy one – this is a ricotta hotcake drizzled with homemade butterscotch in place of your usual maple syrup.

It’s a 20 minute wait, so you might want to order this together with your mains.

Rive Gauche, that cake shop you never really know how to pronounce, now offers sundaes at their newest dine-in flagship store. Being one of the longest standing Japanese-French inspired patisserie around in Singapore, it’s definitely about time they opened a dine-in concept for diners to savour their wonderful creations.

Available in 2 flavours – the classic Guanaja ($7.80) and Strawberry ($6.80). Chocolate lovers would enjoy the former, which comes with servings of chocolate sponge and cereals hidden beneath the heap of glorious soft serve.

The Strawberry version is basically a deconstructed version of their strawberry shortcake – complete with chunks of peanut brittle, strawberries, chocolate pearls and a slight drizzle of strawberry sauce. Both sundaes feature soft serve made from Hokkaido Milk by Japan’s Yosutba Milk Company. Definitely worth the calories and sugar overdose!
