Durian – the King of Fruit, and also Singapore’s very own (unofficial) National fruit. You either love it, or you hate it; with the majority tilting towards loving it. Such prevalence is the love of durian in our culture that it is being folded in, mixed, and integrated into a myriad of desserts and even main dishes (durian fried rice!

Here, we have listed 5 durian desserts that are so good that it is guaranteed to bring you to a blissful state of durian contentment every single time you have it.

1. Durian Crème Brulee

The classic European dessert with a twist of local flavour. The Quarters’ Durian Can-Bo-Leh is a smooth and creamy custard folded in with the fragrant durian. This luscious crème brulee proves to be a wonderful gastronomic experience, without the durian overpowering the overall taste, with each spoonful.

The delicious flaky crust holds the durian jam and creamy durian puree (with some chunks of flesh too!) together in this Durian Egg Tart. We can’t really taste the egg from this egg tart as the taste of the aromatic D24 durian simply overpowers it. But definitely a gratifying eat for all durian lovers.

3. Durian Pengat

The best durian pengat in Singapore, in my humble opinion, is part of a Peranakan buffet offered at Feast@East at Grand Mecure Roxy Hotel. Durian Pengat or durian paste has a semi-porridge-like texture and is commonly eaten as a dessert amongst the Malays and the Peranakans. Super creamy and fragrant, with just the right balance of coconut milk, this durian pengat is the best definition of durian pengat here in Singapore.

Price: Part of the buffet selection. Price list here.

4. Durian Pengat Puff

We are sad to see Puteris Mas – famed for their D24 durian puffs – shut their doors. However, to our relief and delight, their neighbour opposite, Sinpopo, is now serving some kickass durian puffs – Hokkaido style. Encased in the puff’s crusty exterior is their signature creamy and rich durian pengat that is sure to deliver ‘explosions’ of durian goodness in your mouth.
