One bus: two decks and three doors

What are some of the most frustrating situations you face on a day-to-day basis? One of them has to be the struggle to board a public bus because other commuters can’t exit quickly enough. Well, it seems Land Transport Authority (LTA) has a solution:

A three-door double-decker bus that aims to improve commuter flow.

Following the response gathered during the Bus Carnival last year, LTA has collaborated with public transport operators Tower Transit and SMRT, as well as vehicle company ST Kinetics to design this new model of public buses.

Starting from Monday 13 March, the newly-designed bus will be on the road for a 6-month trial. Tower Transit’s trial involves service 143, which travels along Jurong East and Toa Payoh.

Apart from its third door and two staircases, the new model also features a passenger information display system, USB ports and wheelchair space.

According to LTA’s group director of public transport Yeo Teck Guan, the review of public bus design “is a key part of making public transport a choice mode of transport as we move towards a car-lite society.”

LTA also has plans to trial the single-deck three-door bus from the second quarter of 2017, which would look like this:

While the new design is welcomed by many, some others have raised concerns on social media platforms like Facebook:
