If there’s one beverage that has won the world over, it’d be coffee. We Singaporeans are no exception – from kopitiams to the sheer number of cafés littered around the country, it’s not too much to say that kopis are everywhere in Singapore.

And whilst your weekly cafe-hopping seems to already have become a norm – sitting down to a nice, steaming hot cup of coffee and people-watching – the fact that cafes charge heart-stopping prices for coffee isn’t. If this expensive habit of yours isn’t going away anytime soon, you’ll be glad to know that there are two apps in Singapore dedicated to helping you save money as you get your daily cuppa. Here’s a rundown of a comparison of the two coffee app – Kopi Pass and Coffee Break.

Kopi Pass App

It was previously offered as physical card where $30 gets you 30 different cups of awesome coffee at the various participating cafes, but come September Kopi Pass will be launching it in app form. Besides their plan to take users on “Singapore’s first national cafe-hopping trail”, the app will also offer heavily discounted drinks. For just $60, the pass gives you the liberty to redeem one drink per cafe as long as the chosen drink costs less than $6 and it is not a takeaway order.

With over 60 participating cafes islandwide (and 3-5 more added each month), it’s safe to say you’ll be spoilt for choices. The curated list of participating cafes currently includes Nook & Cranny, The Laneway Market, Hatched, Butter Studio, Avenue Cafe and The Assembly Ground.

The app also allows you to redeem special promotions as well as a tab that tells you the must-try dishes at the participating cafe, which is a sure way to tempt us into spending more than we’d like. We’d say the app is a pretty compact deal since it’s also booted with directions to the cafes that you plan to visit – but we aren’t so sure about getting our money’s worth.

Coffee Break

The brainchild of Dennis Ng, Coffee Break is a cafe-locator app that utilizes GPS to locate local cafes in your proximity. Similar to Kopi Pass, the app also has prepaid plans for you to choose from. They range from a $20.50 basic plan, which gets you five cups of coffee and is valid for 30 days, to the master plan at $75, which offers 20 cups over 90 days and works out to $3.75 per cup.

If you can’t live without coffee for more than a few hours each day, go for the unlimited plan. For $90 per week, you get to sip on all the drinks you want – with one restriction: you can only order one cup every two-and-a-half hours.

Their partnerships include Tolido’s Espresso Nook, 25 Grams, The Laneway Market, Drips, JAB Coffee and Guac & Co. We’re a fan of the fact that the app uses GPS to show you all the partner cafes in your area, so it’s a great way to explore new haunts, too. It’s also a bonus that their plans offer greater flexibility and personalisation.

Verdict

In terms of savings, Coffee Break edges out slightly with its variety of plans but if you want an app that does more than save you a lil’ bit of moolah, we recommend Kopi Pass – it’s a handy all-in-one app not just for coffee lovers.
