Endless varieties of tech-gadgets that “wow” us seem to be surface everyday, but not many tend to add real value to our lives. Whether you’re a tech geek or not, the 3 letters, “CES”, would have crept into your news feed by now. CES is a global consumer electronics and consumer technology tradeshow held in Las Vegas, Nevada every year. However, what you might not know is that a surprising number of local innovators had their products on display this year. Here are 5 of their company history and innovations.

1. Ospicon

Ospicon is well-known in the fibre-optic sensing technology world through their patented BreathOptics tech. Envisioning the “human value in technology”, they are the first pioneering company that utilized advances in technology to improve infants and the elders care through their homeware and healthcare products. And yes, they are Singaporeans.

Ospicon designs smart and analytical products for their users. Their Sleep Mat/Safetosleep Mat is the world’s first baby sleep monitor that tracks infants’ bodily activity during their sleep through fibre optic sensors. For instance, the mat will be able to detect an infant’s breath count and capture its breathing pattern.

This information would then be translated into an app which would be useful for both parents and doctors to improve the sleep conditions of their child or spot any signs of irregularities.

For the elderly, Ospicon leverages on the success of Sleep Mat, by similarly monitoring the condition of seniors for better caretaking. Known as Eldercare monitoring, it detects any breathing distress in immobile seniors. It provides caregivers with the necessary information through the app with wireless connectivity, thus eliminating the need for 24/7 supervision. This would be very helpful (and potentially lifesaving) to vulnerable elderly users who are already suffering from sleep apnea (a common sleep disorder where breathing is briefly and repeatedly interrupted).

2. Gosh!’s easyPLAY

Based in Singapore, Gosh! aims to “accentuate your persona and style while protecting your favourites”.

If you’re a pet owner, Gosh! Innovation would probably be the most interesting out of the lot. With their Smart Pet device, easyPLAY lets you play with your pet wherever you are as long as you have your smartphone. easyPLAY is the world’s first robotic toy designed to keep your pet active and healthy—all packed into a mini robotic ball. It physically engages with your pet just like you would, but a mini robotic version.

With a push of a button on your smartphone, the app will coordinate with your easyPLAY ball, which would be at home where your pet is. You could preset “autoplay” mode as well.
