In the blink of an eye, we’re halfway done with 2017. Besides the forecasted thundery showers and cooler weather, here are 12 events lined up in July. There’s plenty to do – so get your bums out and start moving.

1. Weird Wonderful Picnic Day

Picnics no longer have to be a hassle with this upcoming picnic party by the folks at Tiong Bahru Bakery. At this two-day picnic party, all you have to bring is yourself.

Food-wise, expect pastries from Tiong Bahru Bakery, fish sliders from Open Farm Community, kong ba pau from House, and for drinks, expect juices, wines and more. Each bucket, with the exception of the starter bucket, also comes with all your picnicking needs including mats, fans, and even a helium balloon, because why not?

Picnic baskets start at $10 for a starter bucket with all your picnic essentials (includes a mat and a helium balloon) and go up to $200 for a premium bucket containing a wide selection of signature pastries and dishes.

If you’re still hungry after emptying out your picnic, there will also be pop-up stalls by Open Door Policy, House, Open Farm Community and Common Man Coffee Roasters at the lawn area. Good food and vibes – there’s no better way to spend the weekend.

2. Feast On A Durian Buffet

Love it or hate it, our national fruit is here to stay. Held for the third year running, this feast organised by Gain City will feature a sumptuous spread of the best durian in season.

Durian lovers can revel together in the cool night breeze on the roof of Gain City Megastore with a spread of the best durians like D24, Green Bamboo, Red Prawn and the premium grade Mao Shan Wang. And it’s not all Durian, the buffet will also feature other seasonal fruits like Coconuts, longans, mangosteens, rambutans and many other local favourites to temper the intense durian flavours.

3. STREAT

With the Michelin awards just past us, there’s no better time to check out this signature Singapore Food Festival since most of us are still drooling or lusting over a Michelin-starred meal.

STREATS will feature a whole lineup of stalls specially curated by renowned chefs – think hawker stalls and eminent restaurants at a wide range of price points. The 2017 edition will also feature Chef Malcolm Lee of the Michelin-starred restaurant Candlenut and Chef Willin Low of Wild Rocket.

For $50 nett, you will be served a 3-course Mod-Sin and Peranakan menu complete with appetisers and mains all served communal style. But don’t fret, they don’t expect you to share desserts – those will be served individually.

There are also takeaway counters from the likes of New Ubin Seafood, Peranakan Khek, Whampoa Prawn Noodle and The Masses for those who didn’t manage to reserve a table.

4. For The Aspiring Global Change-Makers

If you’ve ever wanted to make the world a better place, here’s your chance to do it. In celebration of Youth Month, Singapore will hold its first volunteer festival to provide a platform for youths to kickstart the spirit of volunteerism.

5. Get Down And Artsy With Tanjong Goodman

6. Head Down To Singapore’s Largest Free Music Festival

The annual alternative music festival that has been raising the torch for Singapore’s music scene is returning for three days to showcase both well-known local and regional acts. Baybeats will have four stages this year, with each catering to a specific sound – don’t be surprised to spot intimate, electronic sets at the Chillout Stage, or belligerent post-rock at the Powerhouse.

Expect to hear from Indonesian rock group BARASUARA, alternative band sub:shaman and local faces like Subsonic Eye, Tides and FXTRT.

This festival also celebrates the music-loving lifestyle with a festival village that brings together local indie crafters and entrepreneurs. No tickets are required for this event so just cruise in whenever you want!

7. Take In The Most Iconic Japanese Animation Scenes

Studio Ghibli fans, get excited: a selection of original celluloids from director Hayao Miyazaki are on permanent display at Polar Bear Gallery, including scenes from My Neighbour Totoro, Princess Mononoke and Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

The illustrations are part of a private collection that is said to be exhibited for the first time ever in Singapore. Designed before the advent of computer animation, the works depicted are all hand-drawn and taken from the most iconic scenes in Miyazaki’s widely loved films.

8. For All Things Thai

It may well be the land of smiles, but for many, the first thing that comes to mind when we think of Thailand is the nation’s incredible food.

Following the roaring success of their 2016 event, Chang, Thailand’s iconic beer, is pleased to present the second edition of Chang Sensory Trails. The international foodie extravaganza is designed to be a celebration of the well-loved dishes that can be found on the streets of Bangkok (and in Singapore), as well as the lesser-known regions on the Thai culinary map.

On top of the great food and all the Chang you can drink, the festival is also a celebration of Thai art and culture. Visitors can expect live music and interactive art installations; and they can get their portraits drawn by caricature artists.

9. Embark On A World Tour – In Lego Form

Legos – we played with them as children, and some of us still play with these colourful little bricks even as grown-ups. If you’re a fan, this exhibition will have you seeing these humble building blocks in a brand new light.

As part of ASEAN’s 50th anniversary celebrations, Lego has partnered up with the Piece of Peace executive committee to showcase Lego sculptures of various UNESCO world heritage listed sites. Feast your eyes on 34 Lego installations of the world’s iconic landmarks including the likes of Sydney Opera House, Taj Mahal and Japan’s Shinto Shrine. Don’t forget to stop by the Brick by Brick art project, where you can add Lego pieces to create a topographical map of Singapore.

10. Soak Up The Afternoon At This Backyard BBQ

Happening across the weekend of 22 to 23 July 2017, this social market at Singapore’s only restaurant in a farm is back for its tenth edition, and will feature some of our city’s best F&B talents, including artisanal bakers, gourmet grocers, small-batch producers, and even hawkers.

At the event, fusion cafe Bao Maker’s will be whipping up a medley of mouthwatering Asian-inspired buns, Chefy Bakehouse with its salted egg yolk cookies and for something different try QUIRC’s famous quinoa cake. For some pure, unadulterated goodness that’ll probably make you feel like you need to go on a diet pronto, make your own raclette cheese sandwich from The Raclette Movement.

Fresh fruit juices, almond milk and cold brews will also be offered alongside fresh-off-the-grill barbecue grub.

11. Bring Out Your Inner Child At This Circus Extravaganza

The familiar massive blue and yellow tent is rolling into Singapore, and it can only mean one thing – the circus is back in town! And not just any circus, at that. The newest installment of world-famous circus series, Cirque Du Soleil, returns with a clown-inspired Kooza. Featuring an international cast of 50 acrobats, musicians, actors and singers, the show tells the story of ‘The Innocent’, who goes on a self-discovery trip and meets eccentric characters and experiences countless thrills along the way.

12. Reminisce About The Good Ol’ Days

Gone are the days when we could fill our tummies for just 50 cents, but you can relive those moments at the Chinatown Food Street happening on the 29th and 30th of July.

Themed Those Years, the festival offers a whole plethora of hawker favourites from the 1980s, such as Abacus Seeds, Cantonese Paper-Wrapped Chicken, Rickshaw Noodles and Ice Balls, at prices starting as low as 50 cents.
